I think you folks are missing an important point when you talk about being isolated from "the gay community"

Most people go to a bar, club or social function because there is some kind of unifying element... People who like the same kind of music, people with the same level of education, people who young or old or wealthy or involved in a certain industry or hobby.

Going to a gay bar or club is different - the only unifying element is our sexuality! You have young and old - ivy leaguers and meth heads in the same room. Does that make any sense? The gay community is sort of ficitious if you ask me. Just being gay does not automatically make you like someone, or want to be apart of their "community".
